Rusophycus

Rusophycus carleyi (J. F. James); cast of trilobite trace intersecting Palaeophycus-like trace. Anterior direction is toward the left; casts of genal spines, pygidial and cephalic doublures, and ....

Recurring associations of the trilobite ichnogenus Rusophycus with various "worm" burrows suggest an interaction between the two tracemakers, specifically, capture of the worm by the trilobite. An exceptional ichnofossil from the Upper Ordovician of southwestern Ohio shows characters consistent with previously described "trilobite hunting burrows" from Cambrian and Silurian strata ...Rusophycus, the resting trace, are trilobite excavations involving little or no forward movement and ethological interpretations suggest resting, protection and hunting. Cruziana, the feeding trace, are furrows through the sediment, which are believed to represent the movement of trilobites while deposit feeding.

This is a Rusophycus, a type of trilobite trace fossil. Given the collecting location, size and shape, it almost certainly was left by a Flexicalymene. These trace fossils are uncommon at the locality, much rarer than the trilobites themselves. Rusophycus were left by trilobites digging straight down into a muddy botton.Trace fossil specimen of Rusophycus bilobatus from the Silurian Rose Hill Shale of Scott County, Virginia (PRI 76852). This resting trace was likely made by a trilobite. Specimen is from the research collections of the Paleontological Research Institution, Ithaca, New York. The Trypanites Ichnofacies is characterized by domichnial borings of worms ( Trypanites ), bivalves ( Gostrochaenolites ), barnacles ( Rogerella) and sponges ( Entobia ). These are formed in shoreline rocks or in lithified limestone hard grounds on the seabed. Bioerosion traces made by gastropods and echinoids are rarely preserved in ancient cases. The appearance of Granomarginata approximates the base of the overlying Rusophycus avalonensis Ichnozone. Ribbon-like in form, Isopodichnus traces were likely formed by the activity of an isopod crustacean foraging within the preserved sediment. Parallel to the bedding plane, a central furrow is flanked by two hypichnial ridges. Trails may also exhibit scratch marks and be associated with Rusophycus-like resting traces. Isopodichnus are very similar ...

Arthrophycus brongniartii (Harlan, 1832) is common in marginal-marine deposits in the Silurian Red Mountain Formation of Alabama. The ichnospecies, the second to be named in North America, is revived and emended after long disuse.
